Become Relevant:
Becoming relevant is a key element of success. Anyone that lives at the highest level of life understands this well and focuses on making sure that they are always relevant. If your work requires that you sell something you will only be relevant if you actually sell something. If you talk about selling something every night while sitting at the dinner table and prognosticate about selling something to your colleagues every day but never actually go out and sell something, you are irrelevant even if you have a PhD in sales.
If you work as a mid level Manager in a major corporation and have not yet figured out how to set yourself apart and become someone that the executive management cannot do without you are irrelevant even if you get high marks for being the smartest guy in the department. If you are a parent and ignore the needs of your children as they grow up because things at the office just could not wait you are setting yourself up to be irrelevant when your kids are in their 20s and you want to hang out with them. If you are a professional athlete and have made it to the “top” but you slack off in practice, don’t give it your all and exhibit abhorrent behavior during the off season you either already are irrelevant or are in the process of becoming irrelevant very soon.
You see, becoming relevant means that you have positioned yourself so that others cannot do without you and when they try they quickly realize that they need you back. It means that you are adding so much value to a business, to a team, to a government, to your family that they will fight hard to support you, to keep you on the team and to make sure that you are well taken care of. Becoming relevant only happens though when you have first taken care of yourself. It has been my experience that so many people go through life trying to help others first that they forget about themselves and in the process end up not doing very well by anyone. There are exceptions to this such as Mother Theresa who completely dedicated her life to first serving others. That was her sole purpose and desire. Hence, she was completely relevant.
